Abstract

Arabic proverbs constitute one of the most significant forms of oral heritage reflecting the intellectual depth, linguistic aesthetics, and social consciousness of Arab culture. This study examines the works written on Arabic proverbs from a historical and methodological perspective, analyzing their development and transformation from the classical period to the modern era. A descriptive and analytical approach has been employed, and approximately thirty major works in the field of Arabic proverbs have been examined. The study identifies three main stages in the history of Arabic proverb compilation. In the first stage, the primary aim was the preservation of the language and the recording of oral heritage, whereas in the following stages proverbs were addressed in terms of morality, culture, and rhetoric. In the modern period, proverbs have become a shared field of study for both the social sciences and literary research. This study offers an original evaluation by examining the literature on Arabic proverbs within a framework of historical continuity and by revealing the methodological transformation from the classical tradition of transmission to the modern academic approach. The findings demonstrate that proverbs are not merely products of oral culture but also constitute an interdisciplinary field of research reflecting the expressive power of the Arabic language, cultural memory, and intellectual continuity. Thus, Arabic proverbs can be considered not only a form of inherited oral heritage but also a dynamic cultural and academic source that contributes to understanding the development of Arab thought.
